The Heart of Drawing
Ages: 9 to 14 years
Skill Level: All Skill Levels
Teacher: Rebecca Borrelli
Research shows that if a child becomes confident in his or her ability to represent the world realistically, they will continue to make art in some capacity for the rest of their life.
Just as literacy can be taught to all ages and ability levels, so can visual expression. Children in this course will be introduced to naturalistic and abstract drawing by creating a personal sketchbook. The course will be student-centered and driven. Students will gain increasing levels of autonomy over the course of 12 weeks- encouraged to explore their own identity and interests and direction with drawing.
Course time will be divided between reflection on personal interests, storytelling, books, poetry, music, contemporary artwork, and experimenting with a variety of drawing methods: contour line, graphing, shading, still life, comic-cartoon, and basic perspective. The end result with be a body of drawings that reflect natural and abstract worlds, as well as your child’s unique interests and personality.
